Can You Shave With Coconut Oil?

We know there are already countless products that you can use to shave and sculpt your body hair. With tons of shaving creams, foams and gels available, chances are you’ve already discovered something that works for you. But hear us out: you can actually shave with coconut oil! This natural skincare phenomenon offers a bunch of benefits, but don’t just take our word for it – let us explain why you should try shaving with coconut oil.

Why is it good to shave with coconut oil?

It’s a natural moisturiser

Due to its high concentration of fatty acid, it’s great for those with dry skin, especially during the colder monthsThe skin loses some of its natural oils when you shave – and coconut oil can replenish skin almost immediately. It’s moisturising properties also mean it can soften hairs before shaving, which helps prevent ingrown hairs.

It has antibacterial properties

That’s right, coconut oil is naturally antibacterial. It will remove any bacteria from your face that’s collected on the skin throughout the day, and help to prevent any potential cuts from getting infected.

It can help prevent acne

The fatty acids give coconut oil its antimicrobial properties, helping to protect your skin from microorganisms which could cause acne.

It’s an anti-inflammatory

Research has shown that coconut oil is great for soothing skin conditions such as eczema. It’s also rich in antioxidants, which fight off free radicals that can potentially cause inflammation.

Before we move on to shaving with coconut oil, there are a few things worth noting. Firstly, you should test coconut oil on a small patch of your skin before slathering it all over your face or body – that way, you’ll be able to see how your skin reacts and whether it’s likely to cause irritation. Secondly, if you have oily skin, you may want to avoid using coconut oil on your face but don’t let that stop you from trying it on your legs or other parts of the body!

Shaving with coconut oil

STEP 1:

Before applying, make sure your skin is cleansed and exfoliated. Then, grab a scoop (or a couple of spoons) of coconut oil and rub into your hands until it warms up and becomes soft.

STEP 2:

Apply to your face and leave to settle. This will be more effective during or after a shower, as the steam will open your pores, allowing the oil to be properly absorbed into the skin.

STEP 3:

Shave! Make sure you rinse your razor frequently, as a build-up of coconut oil can limit the effectiveness of the blades.

STEP 4:

When you’re done, make sure to wash your face thoroughly, as oil is water resistant. Alternatively, apply an extra layer of coconut oil for added moisturising benefits.
